For many it was only a small tail. For Alayna it meant being able to look in the mirror and finally see how much road he had done.
Alayna Riozzi-Bodine is 21 years old, studying nursing at Monmouth University and has already faced Hodgkin's lymphoma twice.
The first diagnosis came when Alayna was only 17 years old. In 2023 the disease returned, forcing it to once again face a path made of complex care, until bone marrow transplantation.
Then, in July 2025, there came the news that he had been waiting for years: Alayna was declared free of cancer.
From that moment on, he began to document another part of his story: that of reconstruction. The body that recovers the forces, the daily life that slowly returns, the hair that again grow.
Until a day apparently normal.
Alayna realized that her hair had become long enough to be collected in a small tail.
A tiny gesture, after everything he had crossed. And that's why it's huge.
When a disease changes the body and scans for years life with diagnosis, therapies and recoveries, even something that seemed previously assumed can take on a completely different meaning.
That little tail didn't erase what happened.
It represented something simpler and more concrete: a part of his life that was coming back.
And for a girl who had known cancer at only 17 years old, being able to collect her hair again meant to have a visible sign of the road ahead.
Sometimes big victories don't make noise.
Sometimes they're all in a little hair elastic.
