Every time he dives, he hopes it's the last.

Not because he wants to stop.

But because he dreams of finally finding his wife.

On 11 March 2011, the devastating earthquake and the subsequent tsunami that struck Japan changed the life of Yasuo Takamatsu.

His wife, Yuko, worked in a bank in the coastal town of Onagawa when the wave overwhelmed everything.

No trace was found of her.

For more than two years Yasuo sought her on the mainland, taking part in research operations along with thousands of other people.

Then he made a decision that no one expected.

He learned to dive.

Since 2013 he continues to explore the seabeds in the hope of bringing Yuko home.

He has made hundreds of dives, dealing with cold running, cold water and difficult backdrops, without ever losing hope.

To push it there is also a last message that Yuko tried to send just before being overwhelmed by the tsunami.

"I want to go home. ยป

Those words became the promise that Yasuo decided to keep for both of us.

Yuko is one of 2.523 people whose body has never been found after the 11 March 2011 disaster.

His story moved Japan and the rest of the world to inspire the documentary *The Diver*, released in 2023.

There are people who measure time in days.

Others measure it in anniversaries.

Yasuo measures it in diving.

For as long as he continues to descend into that sea, a part of him will continue to believe that the trip to Yuko's house is not yet finished.
